What are Solar Energy Systems?

A solar energy system, also known as a solar power system, is a collective term for the various types of equipment required to harness and use solar energy. Solar energy systems can now be built by purchasing individual pieces of equipment or complete kits that include everything needed to set up a functional solar energy storage and retrieval system. While the cost of purchasing these systems is still high, the costs of securing and installing them are significantly lower than they were even a decade ago.

Solar energy systems are typically built around two pieces of equipment: solar panels and batteries. The panels are placed in such a way that they will receive direct sunlight for the majority of the day. The energy captured by these panels is stored in the battery or batteries, allowing the energy to be used at any time of day or night. It’s worth noting that solar panels continue to collect energy even when it’s cloudy outside.

Most solar energy systems also include a mount, which aids in the operation of the panels. The mount is essentially a framework for the panels, and it can be adjusted to maximize energy collection during various seasons. Manual repositioning is available on some mounts, while power driven hydraulics are available on more recent models.

Today’s solar energy systems include controllers as well. The controller aids in the control of power flow from the batteries to the building’s electrical wiring. The device ensures that the circuits are not overloaded and that the power flow is sufficient to meet the needs of the building’s occupants as part of its basic function. Many controllers also have an inverter, which can detect when an overload is developing and take action to shut down the system automatically.

In most solar energy systems, a meter is also a necessary component. Meters are used to keep track of the current percentage of energy stored in the batteries. This feature can assist homeowners in adjusting their energy usage to match the amount of energy stored. This type of feature is especially useful during the months of the year when more power is required for heating and cooling.

Solar energy systems are becoming increasingly popular as more people become interested in alternative energy production. Many of the individual components are now available in a variety of retail settings, and simple solar power systems can be built using plans found in books and online. Working with solar energy contractors to design a viable system for a home or other building is also an option, as is ordering a system from one of several solar energy companies on a custom basis.
